Kyma Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of advanced materials solutions that promote safety and energy efficiency, is pleased to announce the availability of the EM-Dot™ which is a new type of high performance electromagnetic sensor.
As previously announced, the technology behind the EM-Dot™ is protected under US patent 7,482,814 which is entitled “ELECTRIC/MAGNETIC SENSOR” and was invented by University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) professor Robert Schill and research scientist Marc Popek. Kyma signed an exclusive license to this technology in 2013 and has been working towards its commercialization ever since.
The EM-Dot™ has a small, pen-like form factor and measures the temporal change in the electric or magnetic flux density simultaneously at a single point in space. Transitions between electric and magnetic field dominance (or equivalently, between the open and the short circuit states) can be monitored as characteristic changes on sub-nanosecond or slower time scales. Unlike most other electromagnetic sensor designs, the EM-Dot is symmetric and electrically matched. The output of the sensor operating in the differentiating mode can be easily converted into either electric or magnetic field in both time and frequency domain.
"This novel high performance sensor represents an exciting diversification move for our company," said Keith Evans, Kyma president & CEO. "We have been actively investigating a number of sensor technologies at Kyma for the past several years, both for their potential to monitor our own crystal growth processes and also for their potential as new product offerings. While we offer certain in-situ sensors with our crystal growth tools, the EM-Dot™ represents our first stand-alone sensor product offering."
Kyma plans to add a number of supporting products in the near future - e.g., signal amplifiers and low-cost oscilloscopes.
The EM-Dot™ has a broad frequency response which Kyma has documented between 1 MHz and 1GHz. Simple extrapolation suggests that its sensitivity may easily extend to 10GHz and beyond. Applications are manifold and include aerospace, pulsed power, power electronics, ground fault detect, electric grid, automotive, plasma physics, and materials science.
Kyma is seeking early evaluators and adopters of the EM-Dot™ and on a case by case basis is willing to exchange one or more sensors for agreement to share information on how the sensor can be used for a given application.
